Canvas (2023)

unraveled 37 x 62 inch canvas, ink, installation dimensions variable

The act of meticulously taking something apart provides the space and time for me to observe the material I am working with and reflect on the object’s cultural symbolism.  With a background in painting, I view the medium of paint on canvas through a Western historical lens. To me, painting is a sculptural form, with the materials of a painting canvas evoking that of body and identity. To create this piece, I unraveled a large piece of canvas — thread by thread — then tied the pieces back together. I first pulled out the weft threads (the horizontal threads woven into the vertical, warp threads). This part of the canvas hangs down while the remaining warp threads stretch up from the ground.
